Nausicaä and the Start of the Adventure

The best random-searching moment yesterday, was that I watched "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" (1984) for the first time. It was a great introduction to Studio Ghibli too, whereas the studio been founded just after the movie's success in 1985.

Yeah, I knew Nausicaä, I knew Studio Ghibli since a long-long time ago, but did never really watched one. Hell yeah Indonesian television. You do prefer to have low-taste-yet-cheap programs rather than airred such art-works. Otherwise, thanks to internet connection of modern civilization (if our beloved former minister asked: what is for to have fast internet connection? God-damn to watch anime, online!).

Okay, back to the topic. "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" was created by Hayao Miyazaki (1941-). It tells about a seaside kingdom called Valley of the Wind, which exist a thousand years in the future after an apocalyptic war that destroyed civilizations and nature. This kingdom is led by a young princess named Nausicaä, an adventurous, warm-hearted girl, who constantly tries to live alongside 'Ohm', a giant-mutant-insects that resident Sea of Decays/Toxic Jungle. Nausicaä's world is the one where human-being harmed nature so bad that it triggers 'natural-mechanism' to counter our existence. Actually, a lesson to fight brutal industrialization and raging wars like today.

Futhermore, this movie was scored 8.1/10 by IMDb, recommended by World Wild Fund (WWF), and advocating environmental issues throughout decades. It still shivers me to know that this movie was made in 1984, and the story's becoming more relevant to our reality day by day. Beside the idea of environmentalism, a story of young princess who protects her people, doing research (science!), fights decisively, and befriends ugly creature like Ohm is extraordinary and charming in the same time. It is incomparable to the common princesses who only wait for its prince to save herself from the witch. Nausicaä is a beautiful story for all ages.

Somewhat, the gliders of the Valley of the Wind (a wind-riding vehicle) and the aircrafts there also fascinate me. I believe that it (and also with "A Castle in the Sky" (1986)'s aircrafts, another Ghibli's movie) inspire the design of "Wind Rider" (2006) and "Windrider: Sky Age" (2010), an Indonesian comic made by Is Yuniarto. I do not know where the first inspiration of these gliders come from. Even DaVinci's work and Mayan's relic have a similar design too. Well, not really important though. What important is, "Nausicaä, the Valley of the Wind" start my adventure with the beauty of Studio Ghibli's masterpieces.

"Spirited Away", "My Neighbor Totoro", and "Princess Mononoke" to go!
